A Mechatronic Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and integrating mechanical, electrical, and control systems into a single functioning product or machine. The role focuses on building smart and automated systems such as robots, factory automation lines, AGVs, or mechatronic test rigs. This role suits someone who likes both hardware and software and can model systems before building them.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, simulate, and validate control systems using MATLAB/Simulink to predict system behavior before prototyping.
- Select and integrate sensors, actuators, motor drivers, and controllers into a complete mechatronic setup.
- Develop embedded or microcontroller-based control logic (e.g. Arduino, STM32, PLC) for motion control, positioning, or safety.
- Create 3D models or mechanical layouts in CAD to ensure physical integration of components.
- Perform system-level testing, data acquisition, and troubleshooting of electromechanical systems.
- Work with manufacturing or production teams to turn prototypes into buildable products.
- Prepare technical documentation such as wiring diagrams, system architecture, FBDs, and test reports.
- Stay updated on Industry 4.0 practices such as condition monitoring, remote diagnostics, and predictive maintenance.
Required Skills and Tools
- MATLAB/Simulink for modeling, control, and system identification.
- Good understanding of control theory (PID, state space, system dynamics).
- Basic to intermediate embedded programming (C/C++, ladder logic, or Arduino).
- Mechanical aptitude with CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor or similar).
- Knowledge of sensors (encoders, IMU, pressure, proximity) and actuators (servo, stepper, pneumatic).
- Ability to read circuit diagrams and work with low-voltage systems.
Preferred Background
- Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical/Electronics, or related engineering.
- Experience in robotics, automation, or product development.
- Exposure to HIL/SIL testing is a plus.
