Role Purpose**
- This role supports the financial accounting activities for the British Council and works closely with the Managed Service Provider (MSP) to ensure financial accounts are completed correctly and in a timely manner, with accurate reporting.
- It provides effective financial support services for the local business unit/country, including finance administration and coordination/logistical support.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Commercial and Financial Management
- Support delivery of retained financial processes with MSP and controllership teams, ensuring accurate and robust financial accounting aligned with corporate policies.
- Maintain financial records per internal audit and policy.
- Complete month-end and year-end financial tasks and support closing steps.
- Support customer transactions and income collection process; ensure integrity of cash collection and refund processes.
- Ensure compliance with treasury policy and submit relevant documents to local banks as requested, including bank mandates updates.
- Support accounting transactions, adjustments (accruals, deferrals, provisions), reconciliations, and intercompany accounting.
- Assist with manual journals and off-system payment requests.
- Contribute to financial reports, statutory reporting, tax review/filing, cashflow reporting, and debtor management.
- Assist in preparing local tax submissions and other statutory returns.
- Provide information to internal/external auditors and support implementation of audit recommendations.
- Assist with management accounting tasks and reporting.
- Support administration of local databases/customised software and provide training/advice as needed.
Relationship and Stakeholder Management
- Proactively communicate and liaise with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective coordination and delivery of services.
- Build understanding of key contacts across departments and regions to resolve issues effectively.
Managing Self And Others
- Plan and prioritize own activities to ensure effective delivery of responsibilities over set reporting timescales.
- Maintain high standards of financial administration and discipline.
- Coordinate with internal customers, colleagues, or third-party suppliers to complete activities in accordance with agreed financial procedures.
Customer Support
- Respond to customer enquiries and act as a point of reference.
- Escalate complex issues to appropriate parties (i.e. Line Manager, MSP etc)
Minimum/Essential
Role specific knowledge and experience:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting with minimum 5 years of relevant work experience.
- Knowledge of statutory accounting principles and practices, including accruals and financial transaction impacts.
- Proven accounting and financial analytical experience.
- Advanced experience of Microsoft Office
- Good level of understanding of relevant software (SAP and Coretax)
Desirable
- Experience of working in an international organization and/or government sector.
- Exposure to tax audit or tax inquiry (e.g., preparing response to SP2DK).
- Understanding of Transfer Pricing and Tax Planning concepts.
- Understanding of governance, internal control and risk management concepts.
- Certified Brevet A and B
Role Specific Skills
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Good data management, with understanding in Data Analysis and Data Program.
- Excellent IT skills, particularly on Excel and Power BI/Phyton.
- Good literacy and numeracy skills, able to understand profit and loss calculations and basic finance.
- Ability to explain complex financial data to non-finance people, using simple language.
- Ability to work in virtual teams.
Additional Job Requirements
- Some travel may be required but is not expected to be significant.
Language Requirement
- The British Council systems and global processes operate in English. Written and verbal proficiency in English is required.
