Extrusion Operator/Technician

PurposeThe Extrusion Operator/Technician is responsible for troubleshooting and executing production processes to ensure the efficient and high-quality manufacturing of pet food products. This involves maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and operating state‑of‑the‑art machines and equipment in the Extrusion, Packing, Meats, Treats & RDF, and Raw Material Handling/Batching lines.
Responsibilities- Production Operations: Perform and execute production processes to meet production targets and quality standards. Monitor production output and adjust workflows as needed to optimize efficiency. Ensure compliance with GMP and safety regulations. Conduct regular quality control checks to maintain product quality. Coordinate with production team members to optimize efficiency and minimize downtime.
- Equipment Maintenance and Operation: Perform or audit routine maintenance or Basic Equipment Care (BEC) and repairs on production equipment to ensure optimal performance. Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and coordinate with the maintenance team for resolution. Operate machinery and equipment according to standard operating procedures.
- Quality Control and Assurance: Implement and maintain quality control procedures to ensure product consistency and compliance with regulatory standards. Conduct inspections and tests on raw materials, in-process products, and finished goods to verify that quality specifications are met. Document quality control findings and initiate corrective actions as needed.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and company policies. Conduct safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and implement corrective measures. Train team members on safe work practices and emergency procedures. Encourage a safety‑first culture among all production staff.
- Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency improvements. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to implement process improvements and streamline workflows.
- Professional Development: Facilitate ongoing learning and development opportunities for new and existing team members. Stay updated on industry trends, best practices, and regulatory requirements relevant to pet food manufacturing. Encourage continuous improvement and innovation in production processes.
- Ad hoc: Perform other tasks that may be assigned either individually or as part of a committee or team. From time to time, you may be directed to realign your efforts with the changing needs of the business.
- A bachelor's degree in food science, engineering or a related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in food manufacturing as a Production Technician or Extrusion Technician.
- Experience in pet food production is advantageous.
- Strong experience with extrusion technology.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to relate effectively with all team members.
- Excellent organizational skills and proficiency in scheduling multiple activities and resources.
- Willing to work in New Zealand.
- Equipment‑specific training and Basic Manufacturing certification preferred but not required.
- Forklift License, First Aid Certification, Food Safety Certification (e.g., HACCP) preferred but not required.
